37,960 Covid cases were recorded across the UK, latest daily figures from the Department of Health show. The figure is 5.2% higher than the 36,100 cases recorded last Monday and comes amid fears of a fourth wave. Separate data shows rates have been rising for a fortnight, following the return of pupils to classrooms. Experts had always warned of a fresh wave after the return of schools, where the majority are not vaccinated. Meanwhile, hospitalisations and deaths, which lag behind infection rates by a few weeks, continued to fall.
